About Parent-Teacher Conferences:
In the United States, educators believe that parents and teachers are a team that helps children succeed in school. Parent teacher conferences are an important part in creating the support that students need to be successful at school. Teachers contact parents when they wish to have a conference with about your child. However, parents can always request a conference with a teacher at any time. If you would like to request a conference with your child’s teacher, please email him or her directly, or use one of the forms below. Please attach the translated form to the English version so that the teacher knows what you are requesting.

For All Students
- Keep your home language strong. Speak your language at home to your child each day. Set the expectation that your child must speak your language with you. Read books in your language to your child each week. Teach your child to read and write your language. If possible, watch movies in your language with your child each month. Research shows that when the child's first language ("home language") is strong, the new language is strong.
- Go to the public library in Ann Arbor and get a free library card. Sometimes the library has books in your language and you can borrow them. Your child can borrow books in English, too.
- Ask your child’s teacher for a RAZ-Kids account so your child can read books at her/his level online.
- Give your child a reward for books that she/he reads in your language and in English.
- Help your child with homework when you can.
- Visit your child’s classroom.
- Read the teacher’s newsletter each week.
- Make an appointment with your child’s teachers. Tell the teachers about your child’s strengths, needs, and interests.
- Go to the parent-teacher conference when the teacher invites you in the fall. See below, "About Parent Teacher Conferences".
For Lower Elementary Students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grades
- For young children, make regular play dates with a classmate from your child’s classroom. This means, invite a child, usually a classmate, to your home on the weekend so your child and the classmate can play together.
- Go online and let your child use www.Starfall.com each day. This is a great website that teaches kids how to read. This website is very colorful and it is a lot of fun.
- Go to the parent-teacher conference when the teacher invites you in the fall. See below, "About Parent Teacher Conferences".
- Request a conference with your child's teacher when you feel it is important to do so. See below, "About Parent Teacher Conferences".
For Upper Elementary Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades
- For older children you can make a play date too, and you can also make a homework date. Older students can do homework together. When homework is finished, your child and the classmate can play together.
- If an older child is a beginner in English, she/he might also enjoy the website called www.Starfall.com.
